Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome
definition

A group of inherited disorders of connective tissue that vary in severity and are transmitted as autosomal recessive, autosomal dominant, or X-linked recessive traits. The primary characteristics are hyperextensible skin and joints, easy bruising, reduced wound healing, pseudotumours, and ocular defects. Distinct abnormalities in collagen synthesis have been identified in some subtypes of the Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (type IV, VI and VII). The prognosis of the various EDS subtypes is based upon the specific associated features and their complications.

Ehlers-Danlos Syndroom, afgekort EDS, is een erfelijke aandoening waarbij het bindweefsel niet goed is aangelegd. Waar steun gegeven moet worden in het lichaam, zit bindweefsel of steunweefsel. Het is dus een belangrijk bestanddeel van bijvoorbeeld botten en van de banden die gewrichten op de plaats moeten houden. Naar schatting lijden in Nederland 3000 mensen aan EDS. Hier zou je uit kunnen concluderen dat het zeldzame ziekte betreft. Maar is dat ook echt zo?

The Ehlers Danlos Foundation of New Zealand began as a support group in May 1995 when it was believed there were only twelve families in the country with the condition. Of course this proved a remarkable underestimation of the number of people within New Zealand who actually have EDS. Also catering for people with Hypermobility Syndrome the group achieved charitable status in early 2000.

Øget hudstrækbarhed, blød, dejagtig hud, rynkede ardannelser og blå mærker indgår som kriterier ved diagnosticering af EDS af klassisk type.

Imidlertid kender man ikke evnen til at genfinde resultaterne af andres undersøgelser af disse hud karakteristika.

Der er således risiko for at 2 læger kommer til forskelligt resultat, når de skal afgøre om en henvist person har EDS af klassisk type.

skör och övertöjbar hud, kronisk värk och smärtor. Det kan ofta vara svårt att få

Het Ehlers-Danlos Syndroom is een heterogene aandoening van het bindweefsel, met name van het collageen. Ze zou bij ongeveer 1:5.000 mensen voorkomen. Hypermobiliteit is een klacht die vaak voorkomt en dus goed bekend is bij de huisarts. Soms is deze hypermobiliteit familiair. Complicaties als gewrichtsluxaties kunnen voorkomen en patiënten klagen vaak over moeheid. In dit tweede artikel over EDS meer informatie.

Ehlers-Danlos Syndrom er et relativt sjelden syndrom (et syndrom er et sett av symptomer og tegn som forekommer sammen), eller rettere sagt gruppe av arvelige tilstander. Det finnes seks ulike typer av syndromet og kategoriseringen av disse endres stadig i takt med ny viten om EDS. Ny kategorisering samt diagnosekriterier ble publisert våren 1998. Hyppigheten av syndromet varierer noe etter hva slags type EDS vi snakker om, men i hovedsak kan vi si at syndromet finnes hos 1 av 10.000-20.000 personer.

Symptoms due to collagen disorder
In the 1800s traveling "freak shows" and circuses were popular in many countries. Among the human oddities on display was often someone dubbed "The India Rubber Man," or if female, "The Elastic Lady." These contortionists were able to bend their bodies into unnatural positions, much to the amazement of spectators.
